ADHD Assessments for adults

Clarity, Understanding and Practical Next Steps

At ABle Therapies, we provide comprehensive, evidence-based ADHD assessments for adults who may be experiencing ongoing difficulties with attention, organisation, focus, impulsivity, or restlessness.

Many adults seek assessment after years of feeling “different,” overwhelmed, disorganised, or inconsistent in their performance - despite being capable and intelligent. An ADHD assessment is not about labelling; it is about understanding your brain, identifying strengths and challenges, and creating a clearer path forward.

Signs You May Consider an ADHD Assessment in Liverpool

You might seek an assessment if you experience:

  • Difficulty sustaining attention
  • Procrastination or task avoidance
  • Disorganisation or time management problems
  • Frequently losing items
  • Impulsivity in decisions or speech
  • Restlessness or difficulty relaxing
  • Emotional dysregulation
  • A history of similar difficulties since childhood

ADHD presents differently in adults than in children, and many individuals (particularly women and high-achieving professionals) are identified later in life.

What does an ADHD assessment include?

1. Initial Consultation (Screening Appointment)

A 60–90 minute appointment to explore:

  • Your current difficulties
  • Developmental and educational history
  • Mental health history
  • Goals for assessment

This session helps determine whether a full ADHD assessment is appropriate.

2. Comprehensive Diagnostic Interview

A detailed clinical interview covering:

  • Childhood symptoms and school experiences
  • Adult functioning across work, home, and relationships
  • Attention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity patterns
  • Emotional regulation and executive functioning
  • Impact on daily life

Where possible, we may request collateral information (e.g., school reports or input from a parent/partner), though this is not always required.

3. Standardised Questionnaires

You will complete validated ADHD rating scales and screening measures. These help assess symptom frequency, severity, and impact.

Screening for related conditions (such as anxiety, depression, trauma, or autism traits) may also be included where relevant, as overlapping symptoms are common.

4. Diagnostic Feedback Session

A dedicated feedback appointment to:

  • Explain findings clearly
  • Confirm whether diagnostic criteria are met
  • Discuss strengths as well as challenges
  • Answer questions
  • Explore next steps

5. Comprehensive Written Report

You will receive a detailed diagnostic report including:

  • Background history
  • Assessment findings
  • Diagnostic conclusion
  • Clinical formulation
  • Recommendations for support
  • Workplace or university accommodation suggestions (if applicable)

This report can be shared with your GP or other healthcare providers if you wish.

After Diagnosis: What Happens Next?

If ADHD is diagnosed, we will discuss tailored support options, which may include:

  • Psychological therapy for ADHD
  • Executive functioning coaching strategies
  • Emotional regulation skills
  • Workplace or academic adjustments
  • Referral for private prescription medication (if appropriate)

If ADHD is not diagnosed, we will still provide a clear explanation of your difficulties and recommend appropriate support.

Choosing a Clinical Psychologist

Why Choose a Clinical Psychologist for an ADHD Assessment?

An ADHD assessment is not simply a checklist of symptoms; it is a careful process of understanding your developmental history, current functioning, strengths, and the broader psychological context of your life. Choosing a Clinical Psychologist means choosing a comprehensive, formulation-led approach rather than a purely diagnostic one.

Dr Alexandra Boughey is a Clinical Psychologist providing ADHD assessments and therapy across Merseyside; with clinic locations including Liverpool city centre, Wirral, Sefton, Knowsley and St Helens. Her experience includes working within the NHS, private practice as well as community and forensic health settings.

Benefits of choosing a Clinical Psychologist

  1. A Whole-Person Perspective
  2. Advanced Doctoral-Level Training
  3. Balanced and Objective Assessment
  4. Strengths-Based Formulation
  5. Integrated Ongoing Support
  6. Clarity, Not Just a Conclusion

Here at ABle Therapies, we create a space for you to feel heard without judgement and focus on supporting you. Please get in touch if you have any questions or would like to make an appointment for an ADHD assessment.

1. A Whole-Person Perspective

Clinical Psychologists are trained to look beyond symptoms. Attention difficulties can overlap with anxiety, trauma, depression, sleep problems, burnout, or autism traits. A thorough psychological assessment considers these factors carefully to ensure an accurate and thoughtful conclusion.

Rather than asking only “Does this meet criteria?”, we also ask:
What has shaped these difficulties? What maintains them? What will genuinely help?

2. Advanced Doctoral-Level Training

Clinical Psychologists complete extensive doctoral training in assessment, diagnosis, research, and multiple therapeutic models. This depth of training supports:

  • Detailed developmental assessment
  • Differential diagnosis
  • Identification of co-occurring conditions
  • Evidence-based recommendations
  • High professional and ethical standards

The focus is on accuracy, clarity, and clinical responsibility.

3. Balanced and Objective Assessment

A high-quality ADHD assessment requires careful evaluation of:

  • Symptom history across the lifespan
  • Functional impact across different settings
  • Alternative explanations
  • Clinical thresholds

A Clinical Psychologist’s role is to provide a balanced, impartial assessment. This ensures that a diagnosis is given when appropriate, and not given when another explanation better accounts for the difficulties.

4. Strengths-Based Formulation

At ABle Therapies, assessment is not about reducing you to a label. Many individuals with ADHD demonstrate creativity, energy, problem-solving ability, and innovation.

A psychological formulation highlights both:

  • Areas of difficulty
  • Personal strengths and adaptive strategies

Understanding your cognitive style can be empowering and validating.

5. Integrated Ongoing Support

If ADHD is diagnosed, support does not stop at the report. Clinical Psychologists are trained therapists who can provide:

  • ADHD-focused psychological therapy
  • Executive functioning strategies
  • Emotional regulation skills
  • Support for self-esteem and identity
  • Workplace or university adjustment guidance

This continuity allows assessment and therapy to be seamlessly integrated.

6. Clarity, Not Just a Conclusion

Many adults seek assessment after years of self-doubt, frustration, or feeling “not good enough.” A well-conducted psychological assessment provides more than a diagnostic outcome, it provides understanding.

Whether ADHD is confirmed or not, you will leave with:

  • A clear explanation of your difficulties
  • Practical recommendations
  • A plan for next steps
