What Happens During Your First Therapy Session?
Starting therapy can bring a mixture of emotions. You may feel hopeful, nervous, uncertain, or all three at once. One of the most common questions people ask is: “What actually happens in the first session?”
Getting to Know You
Your first appointment is an opportunity for us to begin understanding your experiences and what has brought you to therapy.
We’ll talk about:
- The difficulties you’re currently facing.
- How these challenges are affecting your life.
- Any relevant background information.
- What you hope to gain from therapy.
- Any questions or concerns you may have.
There is no expectation to share everything immediately. You decide what feels comfortable to discuss.
Working Together
Therapy is a collaborative process. Rather than being told what to do, you’ll work alongside your psychologist to identify goals and develop an approach that feels supportive and realistic.
Some people arrive with clear objectives, while others simply know that something needs to change. Both are completely okay.
There’s No “Right Way” to Do Therapy
Many people worry they’ll say the wrong thing or become emotional during sessions. The truth is that therapy isn’t a performance.
You don’t need to prepare perfectly or have all the words. Whether you laugh, cry, sit quietly, or take time to gather your thoughts, your experiences are welcome.
At ABle Therapies, our focus is on creating a compassionate, non-judgmental space where you can explore your experiences at your own pace and begin building confidence in your ability to move forward.
